Paul Gustave Doré (January 6, 1832 - January 23, 1883), was a French artist born in Strasbourg. He became a book illustrator in Paris and his commissions included work by Rabelais, Balzac and Dante. In 1853, he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This was followed by other work for British publishers including a new illustrated English Bible.  In addition to his very successful illustrations, he was also an accomplished painter with over 400 pieces in his portfolio.

In 1882, Doré took on his only U.S. commission ever for Poe's The Raven. Doré's interpretations of The Raven were based upon what he conceived as "the enigma of death and the hallucination of an inconsolable soul."  Doré died in early 1883,  just as he was finishing the Raven engravings. He had just turned 51. You can learn more about him here.
